Many people throughout the country are experiencing unusually hot weather this summer. When people are exposed to high temperatures for prolonged periods of time, they can experience some serious health issues. Heat exhaustion is one health issue that occurs during hot weather. This condition can cause headaches and dizziness. If the body temperature increases and is unable to cool back down, it can result in heatstroke.

Thankfully, there are some simple ways to stay safe during hot weather.

Cool Off With Air Conditioning

One of the best ways to protect yourself in the midst of hot weather is to take refuge inside a place that has air conditioning. It's even better if you have air conditioning inside your own home and you can stay indoors all day. If you have to go outside, be sure to do it early in the morning or later at night when it has significantly cooled down.

If you don't have an AC system, you should contact an HVAC technician to install air conditioning inside your home. If you have AC but it's not keeping your home cool enough, you can contact a technician for air conditioning services. They can help you determine what is wrong with your AC and make the necessary repairs.

Wear the Right Clothes

The last thing you want to do during hot weather is increase your body temperature. This is easily done when you don't wear the right clothes. Certain materials and colors help keep your body cool. Light-colored clothes made from natural fabrics, such as cotton and linen, work especially well in hot weather.

You'll also want to accessorize with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for added protection from the heat. You should avoid dark-colored clothes and clothing that is too tight.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Another way to stay safe during hot weather is to drink plenty of water. When you're hot, you sweat, which causes your body to lose fluids. One of the best ways to replace these fluids is to drink water. If you work outside in the heat, the CDC recommends you drink 1 cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes.

If you feel dehydrated, drink fluids that contain plenty of electrolytes, which will help restore sodium and potassium to your body. Drinks that contain electrolytes include coconut water, Gatorade, Pedialyte, and water infused with electrolytes. You should avoid caffeine and alcohol which dehydrate the body.
